Algae Matters: Sargassum and the Transformation of the Caribbean

In October, I presented results of my DFG-funded project "Making Algae (in-)visible" at Bicocca Milano. Drawing on insights from fieldwork, the talk explored the tensions between dominant narratives portraying the algae as an environmental "enemy" and alternative stories that highlight its complex roles in local ecosystems and livelihoods, offering a lens into the socio-ecological entanglements shaping coastal futures. Future collaborations with colleagues at Bicocca and the MaRHE Center surrounding algae, coral, and oceanic life are planned!
