Fieldwork in Norway: Exploring Aquaculture from Fjords to Fish Markets

Our recent fieldwork in Bergen, Norway, provided a unique opportunity to explore one of the world's leading aquaculture industries. Funded by the CHARM EU program, and hosted by Jon Henrik Ziegler Remme and his team, we gained valuable insights into the science, history, and practice of seafood production through a series of engaging site visits; in short, we explored multispecies aquascapes. One of the highlights of our fieldwork was visiting a salmon farm located in a Norwegian fjord. Seeing a commercial aquaculture operation firsthand allowed us to better understand the scale and complexity of modern salmon farming. We learned about fish husbandry, feeding systems, health monitoring, and the technologies used to maintain fish welfare and production efficiency.
