In our talk titled "From trash to treasure – and back? Perceptions, politics, and pragmatism in Sargassum algae management in the Caribbean", my colleague Ramona Haegele and I explored how perceptions of Sargassum oscillate between viewing it as a vital part of marine biodiversity and a disruptive nuisance. This shifting perspective significantly impacts management practices along the Caribbean coast of Mexico. A key focus of our presentation was the ontological struggles surrounding Sargassum. We examined how its positioning on a dirty-clean" continuum shapes management approaches and public perceptions. And, hey, a visit to the microbe museum Micropia in Amsterdam is a must for everyone who wants to learn more about fascinating algae!
